Taekwon-Do

“Taekwon-Do is a martial art to be used only for self defence and only in the cause of justice. The history of Korea contains not a single sample of its military forces being employed for the invasion of its neighbours or for any other purpose except national defence.”

Taekwon-Do has grown in popularity since its inception and is now taught in nearly every country in the world. It is most famous for its spectacular and dynamic kicking techniques, although this has led to the misconception that Taekwon-Do is just a kicking art.

Taekwon-Do does indeed make extensive use of the legs, since the legs are longer and more powerful than the arms, but kicks make up only a small fraction of the total number of Taekwon-Do techniques. There are also blocks, punches and strikes with the hands or arms as well as basic throws and grappling.

The wide range of techniques caters for all types of situations, and students are taught to defend against single and multiple opponents, on foot, seated and prone, and against weapons such as sticks and knives

ITF Kids

ITF Kids is an exciting revolutionary programme for children aged 4-6 years (ITF Kids 1) and 6-8 years (ITF Kids 2) that is endorsed by the ITF (International Taekwon-Do Federation) as the official program to prepare young children for Taekwon-Do.

The course covers many important aspects of growing up including danger awareness, behaviour, attitudes and listening skills. The children learn through fun activities and role playing games, they learn about friendly and unfriendly behaviours and how to report the situations to their parents as well as recognising not to speak with people that they don’t know. They will also learn about road safety and fire safety whilst building their self awareness and confidence at every stage.

There are 5 key characters, each of them represent a different continent in the World and also a Tenet of Taekwon-Do, together they form “The Strongest 5”. These are 5 words that the children will learn about and accomplish tasks based around them. They are Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control and Indomitable Spirit.

We conduct official gradings on Saturdays or Sundays at the end of every term, where the children have an opportunity to show off the skills they have learnt to their parents and will be able to earn a stripe or belt, a badge and a certificate on the day.

Each child will receive a book to follow assignments at home (i.e. Helping at home, Polite at home) as well as working with their Pre-School or Primary teacher to encourage good positive learning behaviours at school. The folder will give you a great opportunity as a parent to encourage the positive behaviours that you would like to see your child demonstrate to have a good strong foundation for their life ahead. The book is also a grading record of how they progress through the syllabus and has some essential tasks about strangers, bullying and life skills.

In our 6-8 years sessions, the children will also learn about calming breaths and positive affirmations. They learn when to use a loud voice and when to use a calm voice as well as how to calm down if they get upset at home or at school. Each class lasts for 45 minutes and the children take part in one or two sessions per week for the whole term. It is also possible for children to start half way through a term with a 4 week trial. Contact us to book your child onto this very popular course which prepares the children not only for good behaviour at home, but also for coming into Taekwon-Do with an understanding of the Martial Art.
